Bath is a city in Somerset in the West of England. It is traditionally linked
with Wells, such as in the case of the Royal Bath and Wells show that happens in
the month of May. It has been given the title of a World Heritage site.
The history of Bath dates back to the ancient
Celts who first settled in Bath due to the powers of the spring water that would
bubble to the surface around what is now in the City and subsequently was
harnessed by the Romans into an organised bathing area. In the Victorian age,
the Great Bath was restored and built around with fine architecture. Nowadays,
the Baths can be visited by tourists and are magnificent to see, the copper in
the water turns the water a turquoise colour, and having no roof it makes a fine
sight. In Georgian times, Bath developed so much so into a Spa destination, that
the architecture of the city reflects this widely with the sweeping semi circle
of terraced houses of the Royal Crescent being the first in the country to
follow such a design. Today in modern times, visitors can once again
partake in the ritual of bathing in hot springs, as Bath Spa has been opened to
the public with a modern building and modern facilities and beauty treatments.
Bath is close to the city of Bristol where many large firms are situated making
Bath an excellent choice to live in whilst maintaining close proximity to
Bristol. Bath is situated on the river Avon, and Pulteney Bridge which spans the
river in the centre of the city, was modelled a little on the Ponte Vecchio in
Florence, Italy.
The main motorway that runs through Somerset
is the M5, and Bath is also relatively close to the M4 motorway that links the
M25 and London to the West of England and Wales, whereas the M5 links through
down to Devon and the South West of England. The A roads A41, A46 and A36 go
through or very near to Bath so reaching Bath is straightforward by car. Trains
also link Bath with the South of England, Bristol and onwards to Wales.
Bath is popular with visitors because of the
hot spring spa, the shops which offer individual shopping experiences, as well
as the main high street names, but also because of the architecture and Abbey.
There are many different places to stay and eat in Bath, from small bed and
breakfast guest houses, to large luxury manor house hotels.
